Duo MFA: Setting Up a MacBook with Touch ID

Users of an Apple Macbook can use their Touch ID feature for authentication in Duo. This guide presumes that you have previously downloaded Duo onto your Apple or Android mobile device, that you have Touch ID set up on your MacBook, and that you have already set up Duo to send notifications via cell phone. Touch ID can only work with Duo through the Chrome browser.

1. Log into Okta as you normally would. After clicking in, click Verify:

2. When Duo sends a push notification, do not accept the notification. Instead, ignore the phone notification and click Other options on your computer.

3. Duo will provide you a list of methods to verify with. At the bottom of the list, click Manage devices.

4. Now you will have to verify your identity with Duo. Choose whichever verification method is your preference.

5. You will see a list of your devices that you use with Duo. Choose Add a device.

6. Click Touch ID to begin the process to set up Touch ID.

7. Click Continue.

8. You will see an alert that you're creating a passkey. Click Continue again.

9. Now you will set up Touch ID. In the window that pops up, do not click anything. Simply use the Touch ID device in the top right corner of your MacBook's keyboard to verify with Touch ID.

10. You will get a message notifying you that Touch ID has been added as an authentication device in Duo. Click Continue.

11. You will now see Touch ID listed as a device in your Duo account. You may return to your Okta login (and can now use Touch ID to verify!).
