Student Technology Requirements

What you should bring to NMH

Students are required to have a computer for use in dorm rooms on campus or at home to complete school work and to communicate with teachers and peers. Students are also required to have a cellphone from a domestic carrier that accepts text messages.

NMH Information Technology (IT) recommends a laptop computer for portability. Students may bring any type of computer that meets the criteria below. All computer operating systems must be in English if support is expected from NMH IT or our outside vendors.

Apple (Mac) or Microsoft Windows-based computers manufactured within the last three years are recommended. All computers must have Microsoft Windows 10, Apple Mac OS X 12, or newer operating systems. We encourage that computers be purchased in the United States and be covered under a manufacturer’s warranty to expedite repair services.

Apple iPads, Microsoft Surface tablets, and Chromebooks may limit opportunities over the course of an NMH education and, therefore, are discouraged as a student’s primary computer.

Internet and Network Access

All campus buildings have wireless internet access. Wired (ethernet-based) internet connectivity is provided in dorm rooms. USB ethernet adapters may be required for computers that lack a built-in ethernet port.

Day students must have regular access to the internet at home.

Student devices will not work on the NMH network until they have been registered with the school, which students will do at the start of the school year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is technical support available on campus?

A professional staff of experienced technicians is available to help resolve technical issues. Major computer repairs are often handled, with parental approval, by an external partner.

Does NMH filter objectionable or obscene material on the internet?

Yes, NMH employs equipment and software for this purpose. However, NMH cannot guarantee 100-percent effectiveness, as the creators of this material are constantly finding ways around the filters.

May I bring a tablet device to NMH?

Yes, you may bring a tablet in addition to your computer. We do not recommend tablets for use as a student’s primary computer.
